Piloting a small airplane is really quite easy to accomplish if you just want to do it once for the experience.

A local company should be willing to give you a lesson and let you fly for about an hour for about $100 to $200.

Actually flying is both surprisingly easy and surprisingly difficult. Those little airplanes actually darn near fly themselves and are extremely easy to handle. But the first time you climb in a cockpit and start attempting to operate multiple controls and watch multiple dials.... well, your brain will go into overload. A *good* instructor will teach you to do one thing at a time and slowly introduce more more control at a time.

Give it a try! It's not that hard, and it's not that expensive.

The exciting part is the landing. I found actually flying, point A to B, to be quite boring. Mostly is was an exercise in adjusting the trim.

Aye, landing is a wee bit more exciting. {smile}

The instructor I was with was very comfortable with me at the controls so I had a lot of fun doing maneuvers in the air (just a wee bit too much experience doing WWII dogfighting on simulators on my PC - I couldn't resist the temptation in the air in a real plane), but adjusting trim is fun too when you are just learning.

No matter what your background or experience, I'd encourage everyone to give it a try. The instructors are prepared to wrestle control from you if necessary.

The weirdest part was trying to drive the thing on the ground using the peddles. Very odd... :D

No kidding! "Driving" an airplane is far harder than flying one! (or at least it seems that way at first)
