What do you think of the idea of having a forum in the Sports section on pool?

Yes, I know Bond hasn't played pool yet. But, we can approach the sport like Bond would.

There's definitely nothing against posting and starting a thread somewhere.

To get better at pool, you have to do three things:

1) Take lessons from a qualified teacher, someone who knows how to teach and can tell you what you're doing wrong and how to fix it. If you're in New York, I can personally vouch for "The Silent Assassin," Tony Robles, who's the house pro at Amsterdam Billiards on 11th Street and the corner of 4th Aveune and who's an all-around great guy.

2) Practice, practice, practice. You have to do the ball drills, which isolate aspects of play that need improvement. When you start out, don't bother with aiming drills. You have to work on your fundamentals first---how you stand to the table, how you grip and stroke the stick, etc.---all of which have to be as exactly the same as is humanly possible each time you take a shot, or it won't matter how good your aim is. And don't bother rolling out the balls and playing games against yourself. That's not practice, that's rolling out the balls and playing games against yourself.

3) Compete in a league. You have to learn from the very beginning of your pool career how to deal with competitive pressure. If you don't deal with that from the start, self-consciousness will forever handicap you. All amateur leagues take, and help to teach, even rank beginners who've never picked up a cue. I can personally vouch for the National Amateur Pool League (NAPL), founded, owned, and operated by Tony Robles.

See you at the table!
